If you follow me on instagram (please do!) you have probably sussed that I was recently wed to my long-time sweetheart, and being a makeup lover I knew that I wanted to take this opportunity to get some new makeup for this special day.
The funny thing about being a “Bride” means constantly resisting the ‘Shoulds’ and ‘Shouldnts’ that are coming at you from every angle and just be true to yourself. I wanted to look good, but I still wanted to look like me. I planned on wearing my classic makeup look, which I knew I could rely on, but with something extra special, and ended up mixing things up a bit. I wanted to share what I went for on the day because I went outside my usual makeup box and I tried out a few new things which gave me great results!
I’ve already been using the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue tinted cream on a daily basis, and it ticks all my boxes, so I just wanted to add some extra polish and glow to my skin. I turned to the BareMinerals Well Rested highlighter and the Stroke of Light brightening concealer.
The highlighter is very lightweight and added a natural sheen, while the concealer has a lovely soft, narrow applicator which meant I could get right in the corners of the eyes and apply with precision. I only used minimal amounts of these products and they all blended in together seamlessly. Even at midnight my skin didn’t look cakey or dull, but still rather dewy and lightweight. That’s over 12 hours of wear. Impressed!
On to the bloom factor! This means glow and colour pops. Think: feminine, natural and easy to maintain throughout the day; which quickly became my mantra for this occasion.
I wanted to spend the day kissing my groom and drinking champagne, not worrying about touch-ups and flaky lips! I opted to ditch my standard bold red liquid lip in view of something outside my usual comfort zone: a barely there, nude-ish low-maintenance lip. Nudestix read my mind with their new lip and cheek crayon in the shade Kiss which I blended on my lips and cheeks with fingers and reapplied throughout the day with ease. It was lovely to wear and although matifying, it isn’t drying and so did not take away from the dew and glow of my skin.
The Balm’s Mary-Loumanizer. Possibly one of the most famous highlighters on Youtube. It was recently named by Lisa Eldridge in her top highlighters of the moment, so with that royal seal of approval I finally went ahead and purchased one. Even though described as ‘blingy’ I did find I had to pack it on to get that beam off the cheek, which means you can’t accidentally look like a space bot which is a good thing in my book. I applied it with a brush and later with fingers; it glided on and stayed on like a dream. I was indeed a glowing bride- and this helped it show up on camera!
I finished my bloom off with a lick of OPI in Coney Island Cotton Candy on my nails for a barely there flush of colour. Again, this was a first for me (I’m a 36 shades of red kind of girl!) so it was rather fun trying out this colour palette. I think this shade really worked with my skin tone and the warm gold and green tones in my engagement ring. Let’s not talk about the fact that I still had wet nails when I left my house to go to the ceremony. Stressful? MUCH.
During the lead up to the wedding I intended to wear my classic cat eye liquid liner. I felt it would go perfectly with my vintage wedding dress and this look has been a long-standing staple for me. Recently however I’ve been mixing things up with a soft smokey eye and felt that perhaps this suited my rather lidded eyes a little better. I could foresee ruined cat-flicks with a swipe of a tear too, so I put down my liner and picked up the palette that I’ve been using recently; the Collection Nude Bronze eyeshadow palette. I love their buttery texture and dramatic but wearable day to night shades. With minimal fallout and good buildability, I patted colour on with fingers and then worked the shape with a fluffy brush to blend out and create my shape. These shades really brought out the colour of my eyes and stayed put all day long. Not bad for under a fiver!
Shu Emura. The holy grail. I know I don’t need to tell you anything about these eyelash curlers but I repurchased this set especially for the day, and they are now back in my makeup bag for everyday use. I don’t know why I ever strayed! These curlers let me get right to the roots of my short, straight lashes and the curl lasts all day. Combined with my first ever purchase of Lancome’s legendary Hypnose mascara (waterproof just in case!) and HELLO Bambi! Full coatings on top and bottom, my lashes lasted all day long. I can’t see myself straying from Lancome mascaras any time soon. Top marks.
I finished things off with a hit of the Co-Lab Dry shampoo + texturizing spray. Shout out to Estee for bringing this product in to my life. It brings body and hold to my very straight, fine locks and gave me that Oomph (a technical term) on the day. Am I disproportionately happy that it now comes in a travel size can? Probably.
And this is the finished look! I was really pleased with how my makeup turned out. As I said, it’s very tempting to get drawn in to all the ‘Bride’ hype and abandon your own personal style for something you would never normally wear. I don’t usually wear false nails or lashes, and although I was considering them, I also wanted to just have a wonderful day and not worry about lashes falling off or something just because I wasn’t used to wearing them.
Now that I’m on the other side I can say that I am so happy with the choices I made. My makeup was effortless, I felt so glamorous but also comfortable in my beautiful dress and my French Sole ballet flats were ultra comfy, once they were on I didnt give them a second thought. I wore my outfit for 13 hours and felt so amazing all day.
